Social work in a clinical setting is a healthcare profession based on theories and methods of prevention and treatment in providing mental health/healthcare services. It focuses on behavioural and bio-psychosocial problems and disorders. Social work’s unique attributes include using the person-in-environment perspective, respecting the importance of client rights, and creating a solid therapeutic alliance between client and practitioner. The knowledge base of Social work in a clinical setting includes theories of biological, psychological and social development; diversity and cultural competency; interpersonal relationships; family and group dynamics; mental disorders; addictions; impacts of illness, trauma or injury and the effects of the physical, social and cultural environment.

I have been in private practice since 2020 and have worked with preteens/teens, adults, and older adults in many different venues, including online, in-person and group settings. I have experience working with issues related to anxiety/depression, trauma, disability and LGBTQ2+. In conjunction with traditional talk-based psychotherapy with many clients, I integrate elements of mindfulness and meditation. I also practice from a psychedelically informed perspective and am open to incorporating holistic healing methods into treatment planning.

Several theories/perspectives inform my work with clients, including Internal Family Systems, Positive CBT, CBT–I (CBT for insomnia), Ego State Therapy, Transactional Analysis and Mindfulness/Meditation. Along with my clinical knowledge, I also have lived experience as a person with a disability (Cerebral Palsy), which also informs my practice. My personal and professional experiences have allowed me to understand that mental health is not the absence of illness but the continuation of wellness. Further, what defines wellness is distinct for every person. If you are looking for a companion on your path to better mental health, I’m willing to join you on your journey.
